Is ‘performance history’ a stumbling block? Controversy over the suspension of singer Harim’s booking raises concerns about censorship in the entertainment industry.

The Ministry of Unification is embroiled in controversy for suspending singer Harim’s performance invitation for an event, citing his performance at a rally urging the resignation of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. On the 13th, Harim revealed on his Instagram that he received a sudden cancellation notice for a government-sponsored event, stating the reason was that he sang at a square last year. Harim performed at a “Citizens’ Cultural Festival Urging President Yoon Suk-yeol to Resign” held at Gwanghwamun Square at the end of last year. In response, a Ministry of Unification official explained that it was not the singer’s invitation that was canceled, but the event itself was postponed after the presidential election, leading to the suspension of invitations. It is interpreted that due to overlapping schedules with the presidential election period, the appearance of a specific singer could cause unnecessary political misunderstandings. The Ministry of Unification stated that they are considering various factors such as the date, venue, lineup, etc., before deciding on maintaining the invitation, as the event schedule has not been finalized yet. The official clarified, “However, there has been no exclusion policy or directive issued at the ministry level.”
